Accredited Surety & Casualty Withdraws from California Workers’ Comp Market — What WorkCompare Users Need to Know
05/30/2025
Accredited Surety and Casualty Company, Inc. (NAIC #26379) has formally notified the California Department of Insurance of its decision to substantially withdraw from the workers’ compensation market in California.
This action affects an estimated 3,949 active workers’ comp policies across the state, totaling over $55 million in direct written premium. The impacted business includes policies underwritten through two general agencies:
- Atlas General Insurance Services (nonrenewals begin May 1, 2025)
- Appalachian Underwriters & Cornerstone Underwriters Partners (nonrenewals begin July 1, 2025)
The withdrawal comes after Accredited and its underwriting partners opted to terminate their business relationships. As a result:
- Policyholders will receive timely notices of nonrenewal, subject to regulatory approval.
- No coverage lapses are expected, as Atlas and Appalachian intend to move affected business to other carriers they represent.
- Accredited has committed to maintaining liability for any claims made before the policy termination dates, as required by California law.
What This Means for You
If you have policies placed with Accredited through either Atlas or Appalachian, you should expect nonrenewal notices soon.
