Analysis: WCIRB Approved Pure Premium Rates effective 9/1/2021
07/23/2021

How do the WCIRB Approved Pure Premium Rates effective 9/1/2021 compare to the approved rates from the prior policy period?

WorkCompare.com has added the WCIRB 9/1/2021 Approved Advisory Rates to our database so users can quickly analyze how these advisory rates compare to rates for 100+ California admitted workers’ compensation companies.  We provide this information to make it easier for brokers and agents to guide their clients to the best buying decisions possible when selecting coverage.

Consider how the average advisory rate* approved for September 1, 2021 compares to the approved rate for the prior policy period:

WCIRB Approved Advisory Rates Eff 1-1-2020

WCIRB Approved Advisory Rates Eff 9-1-2021

% Change

4.30

3.95

-8.14%

*Average rate calculation does not include per capita or per race rates (7707 – Firefighters – volunteers, 7722 – Police, Sheriffs – volunteers, or 8278 – Jockeys).

Keep in mind that pure premium rates are not necessarily what a carrier will charge a policyholder on September 1st.  A pure premium rate is simply the amount the WCIRB expects carriers to pay for claims, losses and loss adjustment expense based on the kind of work an employee does.  The pure premium rates do not contemplate the other things insurance companies need to pay, like salaries to underwriters, commissions to brokers or dividends to shareholders.

Comparing Rates

The table below compares the WCIRB approved pure premium rates in force 9-1-2020 to pure premium rates approved for 9-1-2021.
